  • Christmas Albums -- Glut of the Garbage-- and Other's Recommended albums.

Sorry about the specialized nature of this post.   It is regarding classical style Christmas albums.

Between now and Christmas people will buy christmas albums, if they are not careful they will not be happy with them.

All below is in my opinion of course:

Caveat: I am not including Christmas Oratorio, and Handel Messiah in this list, I am only including christmas carols in below list).

There are SO many Christmas albums, and very few I would want.

Here are the good ones in my opinion: Noel Noel, Price, OSM, Dutoit (Decca/London, never made it to CD; lovely and moving album, I have LP), Many Moods of Christmas (both RCA, Telarc, have both), Fiedler White Christmas (DG I have it), We Wish You a merry Christmas Williams Philips (I have this too).

Underperforming ones in my opinion: Christmas with the Academy (no passion, somewhat boring).

Yes there are good ones with Choir acappella, and choir organ:  Christmas Carols, Musica Sacra (DG discontinued); O Come All Ye Faithful (Kings College Choir Argo/Decca.  The Joy of Christmas, Cathedral Choir Society of the National Cathedral, on Centaur.

Looking at my list, I have enough, and should not buy more.

Its surprising that 99% of christmas albums (in general, accapella, choir orchestra, orchestra, solo) I hear are much less than good.  This whole genre seems to be vastly underperforming.  People maybe buy them as gifts and don't care about quality.  I think it is this:  The general public is not very discriminating, too accepting of poor quality for various reasons.

    Thanks

    Bill

With the usual caveats about mileage and availability, here are some of my favorites:

"Adeste Fidelis!" (Sony SK62688) features the incomparable Emma Kirkby, who has never made a bad record in her life.

Joel Cohen and the Boston Camerata: "A Medieval Christmas," "A Renaissance Christmas" and "A Baroque Christmas": available separately or in a boxed set (Nonesuch 79303-2).

"Carols from the Old and New Worlds" (Volumes I and II): Paul Hillier and Theatre of Voices on Harmonia Mundi.

"Christmas with the Tallis Scholars" 2 cds (Gimell CDGIM 202).

"Christmas with Chanticleer" (Teldec 8573-85555-2) features Dawn Upshaw.

Chanticleer "Sing We Christmas" (Teldec 4509-94563-2).

Anonymous 4 "On Yoolis Night" (Harmonia Mundi 907099): my wife puts this on her studio system whenever she anticipates a difficult client; it always soothes them.

Both volumes of "Comfort and Joy" with Cantus from Stereophile.

And last but by no means least, all three volumes of "A String Quartet Christmas" from our own John Marks. Marks posted on this topic below, but is apparently too ethical to push his own product. I am not so encumbered, and will tell you that these discs are beautifully recorded and performed, and belong in the collections of anyone even remotely interested in Christmas music.

    Happy listening,

    Jim

  • 5400 Wrapup

I like this player.  I am returning it to Crutchfield due its not sonically anywhere near the Simaudio Eclipse and Andromeda in palpability, dynamics, life, etc.  The 5400 lushness is compelling, but not enough to make my keep it.  Its a personal preference.  Of course the 5400 has nice tone, just lacking the lows, and did not have the liveliness I seem to want.  I am open to a 11s2 but I have to get nerve to put out the $3600.  some people say its better than Marantz..thats hard to believe from my standpoint.  I have poor audio memory, but 11s1 sounded great a few years ago I borrowed it, but lacked the bass, and was not as 'raucous' as Sim Eclipse.  I almost bought 11s1.

Its really nice that this postmodern era, we have CD players that are not irratating to listen to, that is why I rejected so many prospective units 7 years ago when I was in search of a replacement for Linn Karik Numerik.

But when I hear the Andromeda do SACD's better than 5400, why do I need it?   Caddy versus Chevy Nova.   I'm grooving now to Vivaldi Dixit Dominus RV594.

I am posting it as I am giving you the whole story.  I wonder if this post is value added.  thanks.

  • Sony SCD-XA5400ES Report Day 16

Below is what I posted on Audio Asylum on Oct 17, 2009.  It reflects not only my opinion, but also of Dave, my friend, who attended college as a Music major.  He composes, and teaches music.  He had a different dayjob as music does not pay enough.

Here is the report on the Sony 5400 along with Simaudio Andromeda, and Eclipse.  Lets be real here, the 5400 does not replace any of my expensive players.  I'll bet if the 5400 had a better power supply it could be better.  The Sims I own have very large and I think good outboard power supplies.  I learned the importance of power in the 1980's when I heard a Cyrus CD player with and without external supply.

Here is the Audio Asylum report:

I listened to the 5400 last night along with Sim Andromeda, and Eclipse.  Music was solely classical.  In summary, 5400 although good, does not compete with the above Simaudio products.  Dave, a former music major and part time composer, was with me.  In all below samples, Andromeda was the best, Eclipse second, and 5400 third.  This is no surprise, as it is in order of price, high to low.  Eclipse lacked lushness of 5400 but had a great measure of frequency response, top to bottom.  The good thing about the 5400, it seems to have an intimacy (good midrange lushness that the Eclipse lacks, but Eclipse and esp. Andromeda has the full blooded sound 5400 lacks).  5400 had lushness, but some of it may be smearing of sound; I am not sure.

I will describe qualitative characteristics to the best of my ability.

Beethoven Missa Solemnis, Bernstein DG:  Andromeda was the best; full power of music. It does the complete frequency spectrum as far as we can tell.

Beethoven 9 Fricsay DG Originals:  Andromeda had the harmonics, body, quality of sound.  Eclipse as above (frequency high to low but lesser extent than Andromeda, lacked lushness of 5400..I could say this for all the samples.

Brahms 1 Ozawa BSO NLA (no longer available Japanese DG):  Andromeda solid, Eclipse had harmonics, 5400 close knit sound.

Mahler 8 Gergiev (LSO) CD layer:  Andromeda had individual instruments, Eclipse little less individual instruments than Andromeda, 5400 instruments do not stand out as well as other CD players here.

Beethoven:  Spring Sonata, Kempff, Menuhin DG 2CD:  Andromeda piano sounds like Steinway?....Eclipse like a Yamaha..5400 like an upright..  Violin good on all CD players.

Mendelssohn Elijah, de Burgos EMI:  Andromeda:  Coherent voices, dynamic, very articulate.  Eclipse more nebulous than Andromeda, 5400lacks power and clarity.  May seem harsh here, but that’s how Dave saw it, me too but I am less articulate than Dave.

Berlioz Requiem  Munch BSO RCA hybrid SACD; played CD layer, but also SACD layer with the 5400.  Andromeda:  Best compared to all players for both SACD or CD.  It had power, fullness of sound, timbre; like being in the hall.  Eclipse:  less defined than Andromeda but still had power.  5400 CD layer:  less articulate than any.  5400 SACD layer:  Close to Andromeda in clarity and power, but not as powerful as Andromeda.  The 5400 on SACD a stellar value, as it is 11% of Andromeda price.

This is my impression of 5400.  Its on trial.  Will I keep it?  Maybe, it has good intimacy (midrange lushness.  You see it’s like a Siren; it lets me forget about reality, I do like the non-reality it gives me sometimes.  5400 may not be best choice for bombastic orchestral works, buts it's good for all music I think.  Worth the money and more: yes. A screaming deal?:  probably not, unless you listen to SACD, then yes.

Thanks for reading.  Owners of 5400, Marantz 11s1, 11s2, and 7s1 please chime in, as well as Simaudio owners.  Simaudio is not mentioned a lot on AA (digital), I'd like to her more, but it would be on the Digital forum.  Lots of comments welcome.  I do not post a lot on AA.

I listed this in SACD thread as 5400 can play SACD, but I did most comparisons on CD, oh well.

    Thanks for reading.

  • Day 6 SCD-XA5400ES Lush

10/8/2009:  The black bobo takes 12 seconds to load a CD from time of door closure.

I burned the sucker in with Telemann concertos (it was the closest CD to the 5400 at the time) for 3 days, will continue more.

sound:  Its getting lusher, like the Marantz 11s1 I had 4 years ago, but half the price.  I am not saying its better than the 11s1, but closer than yesterday.  Its also cheaper looking, definitely row aa not row d like the Andromeda or Sim Eclipse.  Seems like the player fits me when I am in a sleepy mood and don't want to be disturbed by loud dynamics too much.  Its a complement though not equal to the Sim products, 5400 stressing lushness, clarity, while Sim stresses lively rhythms, dynamics, and richness (Sim Andromeda richer than Eclipse).  Lack of dynamics of 5400 still evident.  The Eclipse was also more dynamic than the 11s1.  Andromeda at dynamic range of greater than 120 db is still the best of what I heard.

So yes it is worth $1500, perhaps more.  Its richer than the Linn Ikemi in my opinion (discontinued) that was about $3500.  It would be interesting if anyone has compared the 10 year old Linn CD12 (discontinued) to any of today's CD players.

To be continued...this weekend I hope.....

  • Sony SCD-XA5400ES CD Only --Impressions Day 4 of unit on

Well, here I am again.  I put on my usual list of CD's, Beethoven Missa Solemnis (Bernstein DG), Bruckner 4 Haitink VPO, etc.

The 5400 sounds very linear, like a normal CD player.  I admit it DOES have good clarity of instruments but does not bring out hall acoustics as well as Sim products (Eclipse and Andromeda).  It has a measure of lushness, but it is it enough for me to keep this relatively inexpensive player (Compared to Andromeda its 11% of the cost, what do you expect?  5400 seems to perform well for its price so far).  A giantkiller it is not.  Seems to me its hard to get away from the "you get what you pay for" rule.

Put it like this, if you are in the mood for a calm session with your stereo, then this is good, you have to turn it up to get the excitement.  The Andromeda and Eclipse, you say holy cow, who put the V8 in my stereo (with Andromeda its an afterburner on full bore)?

Power supply.  I don't know the rating on the 5400 supply, but it seems small.  Sim ones are huge.  All CD players benefit from large power supplies.  Maybe Sony ought to sell an outboard one for this, fat chance.  I am not the target audience of Sony.

I have not tried SACD yet.  CD player still burning in.  This is a short post, I have to go now.
